Things to know

• Walls over about 1 metre usually need engineering and may need a building permit (see our permit guide).
• Post size and footing depth depend on wall height and what's behind the wall – driveways and buildings add load.
• Good drainage is still essential. Much of the Ballarat area has heavy clay soils that hold water, so good drainage and footings are essential.
